The school closures, routine disruptions, social isolation and distancing experienced during the pandemic had negative effects on the mental health of children, adolescents and their families. These effects are expected to persist in the mid-to-long term and might be added to the impact on school learning loss. Therefore, there is a clear imperative not to underestimate signs of malaise, mood changes, or actual symptoms of anxiety or depression. In such cases, it is the prompt referral to specialist services that makes the difference.
During the new health event held on Monday 11 October, Dr. F. Starace – Director of the Department of Mental Health and Pathological Dependencies of the AUSL of Modena and Dr. M. Camellini – Cardiologist, Sassuolo Hospital, TS Coordinator AHA and Scientific Director Florim Health&Training project- helped us to explore the topic.
Below two clips presenting the highlights of the issues discussed.
VIDEO BITE 1 | YOUNG PEOPLE IN THE NEW MILLENIUM AND THE IMPACT OF THE PANDEMIC
The Covid-19 restriction measures have interrupted the routines of many boys and girls abruptly, at a very sensitive time in their individual and social development. The negative effects on education, ‘short-term plans’ and the passage into the world of work have led sociologists to describe adolescents as a ‘suspended generation’.
VIDEO BITE 2 | YOUNG PEOPLE’S MENTAL HEALTH BEFORE AND AFTER THE PANDEMIC
The mental disorders in children and adolescents have increased significantly in this period of health emergency. Isolation, loss of relationships with friends, the search for autonomy, depression and a constant fear of the uncertain future are just some of the consequences of the pandemic for the younger population.
